Science has previously known many forms of communication in the animal world. For example, tropical birds known as "hornbillers" inhabiting the rainforests of Ivory Coast have deciphered some of the messages issued by Diana monkey.
While these birds ignore the alarm calls related to terrestrial predators that do not pose a threat to them, they respond to calls that warn of a falcon in the ocean as it poses a direct threat to them.
There are also other studies on the messages exchanged between chitrap and climbing birds to warn against predators.
However, the University of Illinois team showed that the yellow songbird is the only one - so far - that has developed a specific plea for parasites.
The team intends to conduct further future studies on other types of calls between songbirds and blackbirds, in relation to different seasons, such as nesting.
